The best ways to travel from Lisbon to Lagos

In this article, we'll explore the best ways to travel this scenic route, ensuring you make the most of your journey from Portugal's capital to the energetic town of Lagos.

Option 1.

By Train: Enjoying the Scenic Rail Route

The train journey takes you along the scenic western coast of Portugal, treating passengers to breathtaking views of the charming coastal towns. The train departs from Lisbon's main railway station, Gare do Oriente, and takes approximately 4 to 6 hours to reach Lagos depending how regularly the trains are running as you will need to make a train change on the way. Be sure to book a window seat to fully appreciate the stunning landscapes along the way.

Option 2.

By Bus: Cost: Effective and Convenient

Another affordable and convenient option is the bus. Several bus companies operate services between Lisbon and Lagos, offering both direct and indirect routes. The journey takes around 4 to 5 hours, and buses typically provide comfortable seating and air-conditioning. Check the schedules and book your tickets in advance to secure the best prices and ensure a smooth journey. The buses during summer will run every half hour compared to winter which is usually every 2 hours.

Option 3.

By Car: Freedom to Explore at Your Own Pace

The A2 toll road connects Lisbon to the Algarve's A22, stretching from the east, past Faro, and taking you westwards as far as Lagos. The A22 is the perfect east-west road to help you cross the Algarve quickly, allowing you to then explore any of the beautiful towns and villages along the entire south coast. All rental cars come with toll road transponders included, and the trip from Lisbon to Lagos costs approximately 25 euros in tolls. Note that some rental companies may allow you to pick up in Lisbon and drop off in the Algarve, usually at Faro airport, for an additional charge.

Option 4.

By Plane: A Quick Option for Time-Conscious Travelers

For those seeking the quickest option, flying from Lisbon to Lagos is another option. Although there isn't a direct flight, you can catch a short flight from Lisbon to Faro, the nearest major airport to Lagos. From Faro, a bus or taxi can take you the remaining hour to an hour and a half distance to Lagos. While this option may be more expensive, it can save time, making it ideal if you're traveling on a limited time schedule.
